Prestec Wins Crossrail Tunnel-Lining Tender

Prestec UK Ltd has successfully secured a major tunnel-lining contract for Crossrail Farringdon, following a competitive tender against several international companies. Winning the contract is testament to Prestec’s knowledge and unity with Mapei UK offering a truly bespoke solution within this specialist area of tunnelling.

Crossrail’s prestigious tunnel contracts have attracted significant competition within the construction industry, resulting in a number of highly competitive bids, with Prestec UK Ltd recently being awarded the prestigious Crossrail C435 Farringdon tunnel-lining contract by primary contractors, BAM Nuttall, Ferrovial Agroman & Kier
Construction J/V.

The contract is worth £1.2m, with works started late November 14 and expected to last for a 12 month period. Prestec spokesperson, Southern Area Manager, Tom Bugg, comments: “We are delighted to win this prestigious contract, which we believe is due to our extensive knowledge of below ground waterproofing techniques and proven capability to complete the project on time and within budget using UK based specialist material manufacturers.”

Described as Europe’s largest infrastructure project, nearly 21km of twin-bore rail tunnels will eventually be constructed for Crossrail beneath central London. Work commenced in late 2011 and will continue into 2015, with the UK’s most significant tunnel contracts since the Jubilee Line Extension and Channel Tunnel Rail Link being awarded.

Strengthening the win is that works will be carried out by Prestec’s Southern Area Office, based in Wanstead, London E18 2AB and will involve the installation of approximately 33,000m2 of Mapeplan TU S 20 membrane, including fleece layer and protection sheet. The waterproof lining will be applied to the face of the primary concrete tunnel structure constructed of sprayed concrete and finished with a regulating layer. On completion of the Mapei system, which includes water bar installation, re-injectable hoses, contact grouting points and reinforcement anchors, a secondary lining of cast/sprayed concrete will be installed.
