Prestec has been appointed to carry out structural alterations to the frontage of the former Footlights Restaurant, one of Cambridge’s best-known buildings, which now forms part of the busy Grafton Shopping Centre.

Work has already started on altering the front of the former Footlights Restaurant, located in the centre of Cambridge and originally built as a Baptist Chapel in 1874. Today, it forms part of The Grafton Shopping Centre and behind its façade is a clutch of small shop units, known collectively as Eden Hall.

Back in 2009, plans for a £15 million makeover, including remodelling Eden Hall, were put on ice, due to the recession. However, The Grafton Centre has now been put up for sale by owners M & G Investments, with an asking price of £92.5 million, which includes planning consent to redesign and reinvigorate the site.

A spokeswoman for The Grafton said: “The centre is making some minor modifications to the former Footlights unit to remove redundant stairs and introduce some flexibility into the future use of Eden Hall.”

Prestec has been instructed to oversee the removal and demolition of the existing stone staircase to the front of the building, along with the construction of new stone columns, the installation of new doors and windows, removal of ivy and cleaning of the
existing façade.

This is all taking place in the busy shopping precinct adjacent to The Grafton Centre’s main entrance, with work due to be completed in early June.
