Joining Family Firm With Apprenticeship

Anna Hewlett has recently become Prestec’s first Office Apprentice, completing her Business & Administration Diploma NVQ Level 2 in April 2016. Having successfully completed her apprenticeship, she now takes up full-time employment at Prestec, which just happens to be the family business.

From an early age, Anna enjoyed hearing her parents discuss work and knew she wanted to go into the family firm rather than attend sixth form or college. An apprenticeship offered the ideal way forward, and on leaving school, she enrolled at South Staffordshire College.

She describes herself as a happy, bubbly and friendly individual and is always willing to help her work colleagues. She says the apprenticeship has increased her confidence as well as her knowledge, enabling her to join a senior team, showing maturity beyond her years.

A typical day for Anna involves taking on different tasks and learning something new, and she has consistently risen to the challenge, proving to office staff and operatives that she is not just the boss’s daughter. She admits this has been the biggest challenge of all, saying: “With my parents owning the company, I had a real need to prove myself. I didn’t want to be treated differently and needed to show I was willing to work hard.”

When asked what she loves most about her job, Anna mentions helping others. “I love being able to help the office staff, contracts managers and operatives on site, taking the stress away when it gets busy, and I know they appreciate this. I also love being part of the Prestec team and the communal spirit of working together. If there is a problem, they know they can ask me and I am always happy to help.”

Course tutor, Jo Darnell, comments: “Anna has successfully completed her Diploma in Business Administration Level 2 Apprenticeship and her ICT qualification Level 1. She has been a pleasure to teach and has performed all tasks on time to a high standard. I have found Anna to be an effective communicator, with a positive ‘can do’ attitude, and she has consistently proven herself to be a dedicated, hardworking individual. She is an attentive team player, with excellent customer service skills and a sound work ethic, and will make a positive addition to the family business. I have recommended Anna progresses to Level 3 Diploma in Business Administration, commencing June 2016.”
